The communication trench links the front line trench with the support trench
B. What is a fire bay?
Fire bays were straight sections of trench where the troops did their shooting.
C. Why would you not want to be sent to the sap?
You would not want to go to the sap because if you get caught trying to find out information about the enemy you could easily get sniped and killed.
D. Why are the trenches not built in a straight line?
They were not built in a straight line because then you would be easily killed by open fire.
E. What would it be like to stay in the dugout?
It would be bad to stay in the dugout because it would be really cold, there is a small amount of space, you would here lots of wailing shells and if not watched enemies can sneak in.
3. A. What prevents bullets striking a soldier’s chest when he is on the trench board?
Sandbagged parapet and parados would prevent a bullet striking a soldier’s chest.
B. What is the purpose of the sump? What was normally placed over it?
C. Barbed wire entanglements were often 40 yards from the front trench. Considering the types of weapons used on the western trench, what would be their main defensive function?
Their main defensive function would be the trench board but mostly guns such as machine guns.
