  • Employees are expected to be strong contributors and to add value to the organization. From your experience so far (including school, community or work experience)

Undoubtedly, Employees are the most valuable assets the organization.  Motivated employees can create a considerable difference in the profitability of an organization. I have had the opportunity of experiencing this at first had in ONGC when I was promoted as a Shift In Charge to look after a team of 20+ employees to get a result.

  • What do you propose to do in your career in the short and long term? (250 words)

My long-run objective is to achieve a senior managerial position in a large multinational corporation that markets, or preferably manufactures, commodities. One of my highest aspirations is to be one of those who establishes, or significantly advances, such a corporation. Therefore, I intend to develop within the scope of one firm. I believe that on my way to achieve my goal I will express my talents and interests and contribute to society’s prosperity.

Looking two years back, I view my interdisciplinary experience in oil and gas industry, position of responsibilities, and traveling as a part of the solid background that can generate a successful senior manager in a multinational commodities corporation. To complete my preparation process, my short-run objectives are:

a. First – to acquire quality general academic education

b. Second – to develop within the scope of one firm.

  •  Describe a situation where you initiated a new idea or approach and implemented it. How did you go about it?

As it is rightly said, Ideas need room to breathe, One of the good thing about ONGC is that you have time and resources to try your different methods, plus you have experienced work force to give shape to your ideas.

We did 3 things as team to improve efficiency and save some resources of our rig.

  1. Previously, higher authority used to phone call employees to get to know the parameters associated with my job. To resolve this, We developed an app with the help of IIT Delhi CS students so that there is no need to call anyone to get to know all the parameters. If there is some anomaly, usually it indicates some problem. At oil rig, identifying a problem a.s.a.p. is of utmost importance. You can save millions of dollar if you can identify a problem at proper time. So it was a good initiative and helped us several times in identifying a problem before it becomes a big issue.
  2. There was some frequent problem with mud pump, previously we used to identify the leakage by listing sound using human ears. Humans factors are not reliable sometimes. After a leakage you need to identify it a.s.a.p. to avoid further damage. More delay means more problem. We have instrumentation team at ONGC. With their help we developed a system to identify it using accelerometer and vibration sensors. Now we can identify it as soon as it start leaking and stop further damage.

At, IIT”s we leant that making something a standard helps a lot. So that everyone can understand the same language. We did a similar task at our rig and now it is followed in every other rig of our asset.

  • Cite an instance where you were in an ethical dilemma. How did you resolve it?

  • Describe a situation where you were short of time/resources. How did you approach it?
  • Give an incidence where you failed as a team

Our team was assigned you do a specific task and being a shift In charge I was responsible for the completion of task in a particular time frame. During night shift, we were entrusted to complete a very critical task. But because of bad weather and unseasoned rain, work came to halt and it caused the loss of precious rig time. Although I was not directly responsible for the loss but I felt moral responsibility for not completing the job at particular time frame.
