Should College Athletes Be Paid?
Heres a good question, should college athletes be paid? Yes they should. NCAA doesn't think they should. they say that they are amateurs and that they cannot generate a wage off of their sport. But a couple reasons they should are that the athletes cannot afford things and that they play like professionals?money is generated off of them.
First is that they can't afford things.First of all “ A college athlete walked past a mcDonalds and couldn't afford a cheeseburger”(schrager). This says that college athletes don't have a lot or no money. Also “The 15 highest paid NCAA football coaches made $53.4 million;meanwhile, the 14877 Division 1 players made$0"(paid to play1).This is important because coaches can afford expensive things while the players can barely afford food. Also “ A large amount of time for a college athlete is goes into his or hers respective sport, an average of 50 hours a week, according to Nocera. That equates to more than a full time job, which im sure if you asked an athlete, thats exactly what playing a sport is”( paid to play1). this shows that college athletes don't have time for a job.
Second is that they play like professionals and money is generated off of the players. For example"Colligate athletes pay it all on the line when they compete. Just like their professional counterparts, they play the game with heart and soul"(paid to play1). This shows that they play like professionals so they can at least get some form of payment. So "Sure these athletes are also college students and not professionals, but why not at least pay them a decent wage for the hours they dedicate to these
