He trys his hardest in the movie to not become attached to anyone because he is an artist and needs to be free. This is easy for him to do with Hattie, for she is mute. Hattie has no choice but to listen to Emmet since she can speak. She is the ideal incarnation of the dumb blonde, the ultimate match for her loverХs verbal diarrhea. When Hattie expresses sexual desire (by hastily undressing), her lover is paralyzed and the thought of a woman falling in love with him would do the same.
