Antisocial Personality Disorder

Psychopathy and Sociopathy

Anti-Social Personality Disorder is the most common of the three types and is found in as many as 75 percent of the prison population . Alcoholism is a contributing cause or consequence of being antisocial. People that are both antisocial and an alcoholic are prone to violent behavior. Some of the most common symptoms are failure to conform to social norms, deceitfulness, impulsivity, or failure to plan ahead, irritability, aggressiveness, consistent irresponsibility, lack of remorse, and reckless disregard for safety of oneself or others. There are also two types of disorder that are link to this mental disorder and they are Psychopathy, and Sociopathy. (O’Connor).

Psychopathic disorder is the least common but most severe of all three types. It’s found in less than one percent of our population. There are many characteristics of a psychopath, and

they are: egocentricity, impulsivity, irresponsibility, shallow emotions, lack of empathy, guilt or remorse; psychological lying; manipulativeness; and the persistent violation of social norms and expectations. The psychopaths are people who will over react over little things. (O’Connor)

The crimes of psychopaths are usually stone cold killings with no apparent reason for their crimes. They take what they want and do what they please without the slightest sense of guilt or regret. Most societies would regard them as criminals whereas warlike societies might

deem them heroes or leaders. The chemical Serotonin is linked to behavior but it is not the major cause of the disorder. (O’Connor)

There are four different types of psychopaths. Distempered psychopaths: People, who suffered from this disorder, are mostly men. They seem to fly into a rage easily and more often than thee other types of psychopaths. These men have very strong sex drives; they have strong

cravings for drugs, alcohol, stealing and pedophilia. The Boston Strangler was a psychopath that fell into this category (O’Connor).

The second type is the Charismatic Psychopath. People who suffer from this disease are gifted and use their charms to take advantage of their victims. They are fast talkers and possess an unreal ability to persuade their victims to do whatever they want them to do. This type tends to be leaders of cults. The most famous person of this type was Charles Manson (O’Connor).

The third type is the Primary Psychopath. This type doesn’t respond to punishment, apprehension, stress, or disapproval. They live day to day doing whatever is necessary to survive, and show no genuine emotion (O’Connor).

The fourth type is the Secondary Psychopath. These types are risk takers but they are more likely to reactive to stress, worry and guilt. They begin playing by their own rules early in

life. They are driven by their desire to escape guilt or pain. They live their lives by the lure

temptation (O’Connor).

The sociopath has a combination of other mental illnesses that occurred during childhood which are a result of heredity, and have a lack of emotional development. The sociopaths tend to commit crimes, and abuse alcohol and drugs, and have the lack of discipline. These are some of the factors that lead to someone having this disorder. Children who will become a sociopath are incapable of following the rules, skipping school, bullying, stealing, tormenting animals and running away from home. The child will also begin to drink, abuse drugs, and become sexually active at an earlier age than their peers. These children also are likely to develop Attention Deficit Hyperactive disorder (ADHD) (O’Connor).

There are many characteristics of a sociopath and each sociopath has his own special traits. The behavior of a sociopath is so close to normal that it is extremely hard to diagnose. A sociopath is a person that acts against society and their sole purpose is to act against the laws of our society. The violence in many cases is the result of sub-conscious decisions that might lead to murdering or assaulting someone for no reason. When a sociopath is attacking someone, they will inflict more pain if the victim fights back. The lack of moral development lets the person feel no guilt or pain for what they did and quite possibly feeling great about their actions. A sociopath has little self regard for themselves and paying little attention to their own personal safety when picking fights. Quite often they will be outsized and get hurt. The
