Culture is what identifies many people and makes them part of a community. There are many cultures in the world we live in and even sub-cultures. I believe society and where you’re from shapes the culture you live in. For example, if you lived in the city you would be very different if you have been raised in a rural area. It doesn’t necessarily mean where you grow up shapes the culture you will be in. As a Filipino American there is a lot of culture in my ethnicity from the food we eat to the way we speak out language. I was born in Chicago but my Filipino culture seemed to slowly change as I lived in the U.S. Assimilation happened to me because I merged to American culture due to living here. I used to know how to speak my native language but after years of living here it slowly went away. A person can belong in several cultures. One culture that has been with me since day one is Religion. Religion is very important to many Filipinos. Almost all Filipinos are Catholic because of Spanish settlers that conquered the Philippines in the past. Since I was little my parents have enrolled me in a Catholic School. My religion is a part of who I am and shapes me faith. Growing up in the suburbs there wasn’t much diversity in the School I went to. Listening to music was a big part of my life. There is so much culture in music because of all the different types of music. I remember one time at a Jr. High dance there were a couple of students breakdancing. It caught my attention because I’ve always been intrigued about Hip Hop culture. I’ve seen breakdancing all the time on T.V and always wanted to learn it. After seeing it live, I devoted myself to learn it. I practiced rigorously and made new friends. We would always practice after school. The reason why the culture of Hip Hop is so intriguing is because there many elements to it besides the music. Rap is the music and Hip Hop is the culture. The culture of Hip Hop includes breakdancing, Djing, Graffiti, and Mcing. There are many terms that are in this culture. For instance, the term bboy refers to a breakdancer. Breakdancing has been part of my life for many years and still continues to be part of it. I’ve met new people and have traveled to many places for events. There are competitions held worldwide but many people are unaware of it. To the mainstream media breakdancing is often portrayed in music videos and commercials. It started in the 1970’s and still exists today.
Since the days I was playing with G.I Joe gun culture was a part of me. When I was little I used to play with toy guns that even included water guns, NERF guns, and laser guns. ”“The gun culture is a culture shared by people in the gun politics debate, generally those who advocate preserving gun rights and who are against more gun control.
