There have always been subjects which man himself is not able to fully explain, cosmic mysteries that defy the logical mind and go beyond a physical and realist grasp. Throughout history the various peoples inhabiting our planet have tried to help each other understand the inner workings of our being with the use of fantastical stories of mythological proportion. While these stories can differ greatly, as well as show many similarities, perhaps the only similarity they all share is that they require the use of ones imagination or rather, they require an open mind. No one seriously believes that there are thunder gods in the heavens hurling lighting bolts down towards Earth… anymore.
Why is it that people create a system of beliefs? I believe that the answer is simply that everyone has an inborn desire to understand their own creation. As for my own views in regards to this subject, I feel that the reason we exist in this realm is to realize that, “…all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.” (Keenan)
To describe the faith to which I belong would be to describe existence itself in all its glory. I believe that God is in us all as we are all in God. I believe all saints bear the same message, as all major religions are paths to the same place. I believe that if we fail to realize the true reason we are here, we are doomed to repeat ourselves in this existence. Some are born to understand the great mysteries in their lifetimes, while others are still unready to accept the sacred truths. “God is Supreme and God is Love. God is the Word, and to that Word I am yoked. And that Word it is given me to hear: the Word that is the Creator, that is the Ringing Radiance.” (Garbett, 127)
I am not alone believing in the concept of our never ending, self-perpetuating existence, “I embrace my desire to…Feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow, to feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
to bathe in the fountain, …To swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.”(Keenan) The song itself not only references spirals, but the first verse and time signature adhere to the Fibonacci sequence, which suggests a logarithmic spiral called the golden spiral. A spiral that has a growth rate directly related to the golden ratio of approximately 1:1.6180339887.… Artists and architects try to adhere to this ratio because it is believed to be the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing way to proportion things. I believe we should revere our existence for what it is, simply for the fact that we can consciously appreciate how utterly beautiful and miraculous it is as it occurs. Our lives are literally a swing on the spiral, and when they end the spiral will remain.
In mathematics, there is the logarithmic spiral, also called the growth spiral or spira mirabilis. Spira mirabilis literally means miraculous spiral, and it is a shape often found in nature. I believe it is truly miraculous because not only does scaling this shape give the same result as rotating it but one can circle the origin of the spiral an infinite number of times without reaching it; yet, the total distance on this path is finite. Just as one can spend eternity on a path to our Origin and never reaching it, yet still measure the time spent though essentially nothing is accomplished. Time is an illusion created by our minds to trick us into believing progress is occurring regardless of whether or not it truly is, “The human form is not bestowed upon us for the enjoyment of sense pleasures, but for realizing the Lord and merging our souls with Him.” (Singh, 37)
To accept only the things that we perceive as reality in these most obvious physical dimensions is to deny what lies beyond and above. I believe that there is no comparison between religious views when it comes to this matter. However, I also believe that all religions greatly misinterpret the word “God“. Followers of major religions seem to believe that God is a being and not a concept. The concept of God is that all things are simultaneously made of and by God not that God is a supernatural being of infinite benevolence.
