Alzheimer’s, a Disease

Introduction (One Paragraph) (objectives and aims + hypothesis):

Remedying Alzheimer’s, a disease characterized by the deterioration of the nervous system, has depended on studies that focused on prevention and used younger mice in their methods of experimentation. However, this research aims to use J147, a drug that stops cognitive deterioration such as memory loss and worsening brain functions, on aging mice that exhibit advanced AD symptoms.

Summary

In order for the experimentation to be productive and represent the nature of AD in patients, 20 month old mice at late stages of AD were used. J147 a memory strengthening oral drug was fed to the mice and to track the effect of the drug on the brain, behavioral assays, histology, ELISA and Western blotting were used. 60 mice were divided into 5 groups with 12 mice per group: one group was fed J147, the second was fed donepezil, the third was fed a combination of J147 and donepezil and the remaining two groups were left without treatment; the use of the two different drugs was for the purpose of comparing. The data analyzed allowed the researchers to determine that J147 was the better drug for instant improvement of memory especially spatial memory. The methods used were effective because not only did the researchers compare two drugs but they also used a control group (the untreated mice) to track changes, the third group (combination of drugs) was also necessary to showcase changes in other types of memory like contextual memory even though donepezil on its own only improved short term memory.
