Specific purpose: To persuade my audience that ani8mal testing is wrong
Central Idea: By using better alternatives when research is being done on animals will not only prevent problems occurring with animal activists, but will also lessen lawsuits against companies and preserve morals.
Intro:
I. My house, the neighborhood zoo

III. Vivisection is experimenting on an animal where it causes the animal distress in a certain situation.
IV. My three focuses will be on conflicts in the past where animal testing caused problems, the alternatives that come in abundance, and I will go over some of the counter arguments that come along with this topic.
Body:
I. There are conflicts in the past where animal testing caused problems
A. All for Animals newsletter dates back as early as the 17th century.
1. Jeremy Bentham, a philosopher, said in this newsletter “the question is not can they reason. Nor can they talk. But can they suffer?”
B. Vivisection began right around Benthams time period
1. scientists cut open animals to learn about the functions of the heart, lungs and other parts of the body.
C. The practice of testing cosmetics on animals started around 1933
1. Lush Lure’s makeup which was supposed to darken the lashes, causes a womans eyes to burn to an extent that she eventually becomes blind and dies.
D. Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938 was passed because of this particular incident.
1. This was supposed to protect the public from unsafe cosmetics and so scientists resorted to animals to test their dangerous cosmetic products.
2. Draize test and the LD50 were cruel experiments that tested products on animals.The Draize Test required animals be held down while substances were dropped directly in the animals eyes. Accorcding to the National Institue of Heath, they wrote in a release about the LD50 that substances were fed to a group of animals until half of the test subjects died.
3. There are many more different forms on testing that go on behind the closed lab doors.
II. There are plenty of alternatives that can be used instead of live animals
A. By law make-up or household cleaners are not required to be tested on with animals.
1. They are only tested on animals first to prevent any lawsuits that may come against them.
