“The yellow wall paper” Feminist Criticism

Should the woman feel inferior?. In the past years woman’s are always inferior than mans and they still have problems to be good identify in society now in days. In the yellow wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is the embodiment of the struggles faced by woman in seeking freedom of thoughts. where others would see this story as psychological thriller of sorts, it is clear from a feminist standpoint that is a commentary on the state of women in the late 1800.

Woman’s have the pressure by society to stay in the husbands care. Women are pressured by society to married a man that has money so the man can take good care of the woman. “He takes all care from me, so I feel basely ungrateful not to value it more”. Though her husband has removed all control and responsibility from her hands making her feel imprisoned and useless she is pressured by society to thank her husband.

Man’s try to treats the woman as an inferior. Man now in days they have to take control in all because a woman cannot tell a man what to do. “John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage”. John sees his wife’s ideas and thoughts as laughable never taking them seriously.

Men prefer to have the women’s just working at their homes. Women’s they want to have a job or they want to do something else but man’s preferred to keep the women just at home. “that after the wall-paper was changed it would be the heavy bedstead, and then the barred windows, and then that gate at the head of the stairs, and so on” Jane may feel repressed by these bars and gates, her husband refuses to change her environment, he wishes to keep her imprisoned.

Also women feel inferior in front of a man. Must women just find simple jobs to do, for example childcare or housekeeping because the feel is the only thing they can do. “There comes john sister, such a dear girl as she is and so careful of me! She is a perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper and hopes for no better”. John sister is a good person but she do not think that she can be better than that.
