Forestry
Andre was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where he lived for 11 years and
did 7 years of schooling, which includes kindargarden and primary school. In 2004,
he travelled to Shenzhen, China with his parents to learn Mandarin and he studied 6
years in Shenzhen. In 2010, he went to Hong Kong for his last two years of high
school.
Andre came to Canada from Hong Kong 2012 to pursue a diploma in Forest
Operations with a minor in Commerce since it is the closest major to civil engineering
he could find at UBC. However, throughout his university, he realized that he fell in
love with forst operations because this major gave him the opportunity to enjoy nature
while also enjoying the study of forestry in different aspects and scales, such as soil
science, watershed protection, wildlife management, silviculture, machinery, forest
policy, forest econimics, road design, forest pathogens. Andre thinks that his
university time is passing by way too fast because of all the interesting people he has
met, the supporting and caring professors he has, the engaging studying environment
that he is provided with, and the interesting topics in the classrooms. These are the big
reasons and conditions that made Andre strive to become a better, more motivated
student.
Apart from the educational side, the community aspect of living here is a big part of
his life.
