Research Paper: Outline Format
To assist you in developing an effective outline – one with sufficient and appropriate elaboration – follow this approach.
As an alternative to the outline format that features Roman numerals, Arabic numbers, and capital letters, you can opt to follow the same basic plan without the official format, one that can be troublesome when it comes to Microsoft Word and the autoformat’ feature.
Regardless of the presentation, be sure to include the following components:
Introduction, which may be no more than your working thesis
Body Paragraphs with a topic sentence (that refers back to the thesis)
Support statements with basic points
Elaboration that is from your sources/notes and cited accordingly
Conclusion that may restate thesis but may also make recommendation
Your outline may look similar to the following in format:
Introduction
Establish a context for your argument, your analysis
Your working thesis, preferably in bold
Body Paragraph 1 (TO INCLUDE INFORMATION FROM AT LEAST 2 SOURCES)
Your topic sentence
Your first support statement
Elaboration with proper citation
Elaboration with proper citation
Your next support statement

Closing statement
Body Paragraph 2 (TO INCLUDE INFORMATION FROM AT LEAST 2 SOURCES)

(See the back for an example from a previous paper)
Introduction
Almost every teenager in the country learns to drive when they are about to turn sixteen. Unfortunately, teens are only learning and do not have all of the skills and experiences needed for safe driving, yet they still receive their license.
The states determine the requirements to get a driver's license. Not all states have graduated licensing programs, which phase in privileges with age.
Graduated licensing laws could help teen drivers because they would make sure teens have enough skill, lessen the number of accidents, and help teen drivers become more experienced and safe.
