And that’s the reason that the fish is very popular in the whole world. He also noted that According to American Heart Association, in USA people eat tuna and salmon fish twice a week.

What is fish mislabeling?

Mislabeling which is also known as “Misbranding”. It is a violation of federal and state food safety laws. In Mislabeling it can involve an illegal misrepresentation of species, country of origin, weight of the fish and also likewise the collecting ranges.Jacquet and Pauly (2007) observed thatA nine-year audit by the national fish investigation lab found that 37% of fish from haphazardly chose merchants over the US were mislabeled.

Mislabeling Fish:

American uses more seafood in their diets daily and it is a part of their healthy lifestyle. Yet the consumers do not have information about the seafood that they purchase from the markets. The seafood fraud has been uncovered in the United States.

According to Warner (2014)From 2010 to 2012, Oceana led one of the biggest fish misrepresentation examinations on the planet to date, gathering more than 1,200 fish tests from 674 retail outlets in 21 states to figure out whether they were genuinely marked. And when the DNA was tested, it was found that 33 percent of the samples were mislabeledOf the most normally gathered fish sorts, tests sold as snapper and fish had the most noteworthy mislabeling rates (87 and 59 percent, separately), with most of the specimens distinguished by DNA examination as an option that is other than what was found on the name. (Warner, 2014)

Warner (2014) also said that the discoveries show that a far-reaching and straightforward traceability framework – one that tracks fish from watercraft to plate – must be set up at the national level. In the meantime, expanded review and testing of our fish, particularly for mislabeling, and more grounded government and state requirement of existing laws fighting extortion are expected to turn around these exasperating pattern

According toWarner(2014) all the studies that have investigated seafood did not reported 0% fraud overall. A huge number of studies about 91% focused their sampling at the retail end of the supply chain, which includes the grocery stores and restaurants. The few studies were sampled between distributions, processors and wholesalers. Almost every profession’s people from Academics, Customer Organizations, Government, Private, Journalism and also students have reported seafood fraud all over the world. According to Warner(2014), to date, studies and examinations have been directed in 29 nations and on all landmasses aside from Antarctica. In this audit, the United States has the most elevated number of studies on fish extortion at 39, trailed by Spain at 14 and Italy at 11.

In the figure 2, we can see many species of fish. These are mislabeled or unbranded. It is not clear that the fishes that are looking same are of same specie or not. The commonly mislabeled fish around the world is Red snapper. According to (Marko et al. 2011))  .The studies in the U.S. Canada, Panama, and Columbia had 46-100% of fraud levels. Oceana combined the results of eleven studies whichwere done on the red snapper fish, and the results were that 81% of 408 samples of red snappers were mislabeled. Tobe considered a true red snapper, a sample must be confirmed as the correct species (Lutjanuscampechanus), according to Warner (2014) the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)1 and other regional governing bodies, other species of snapper, as well as white fish such as tilapia, are commonly swapped in for genuine red snapper
