What is the Dye that we eat?

We as humans always eat food with food coloring in it. In reality, do we really know what we are eating? We always eat things with food coloring but never know what's in it. Recently studies have shown that dyes can be the cause of cancer and other issues in the human body. We did this experiment to find out is there any difference between the dye used in M&M’s and regular food coloring you can buy at your local supermarket. If we used the M&M’s and the food cooling for the test, then the results will be not exactly the same but very similar because these food dyes used should be very similar. We found that through our tests that the Rf number should have been the same in the M&M’s and food coloring. In the results, nothing showed that. We think that human error and different M&M’s were the cause of this.

For this experiment you will need:

Red, blue, green, orange food dye

Red, blue green and orange M&M’s

Salt water

Chromatography paper

A large jar or beaker

Ruler

Tooth picks

Eye dropper

Pencil

Methods: Starting off you will put an eye drop of water onto each of the four M&M’s (red, blue, green, orange). Next you will wait 10 min for the dye to mix in with the water. After that you will fill up the beaker with about a quarter of an inch of water. Next after the 10 minutes then you will draw a line on the chromatography paper right about where the water stands in the beaker. After that you will
