Main Review

A Modern Form of Slavery: Trafficking of Burmese Women and Girls into Brothels in Thailand

A Modern Form of Slavery, it’s a report based on in-depth interviews with Burmese trafficking victims, it documents the violations of internationally recognized human rights committed against them. This report talks mainly about the thousands of Burmese women and girls that are trafficked into Thai brothels every year where they work under conditions tantamount to slavery. They are taken to this places mostly all the time by lies, telling them they would be taken out of their poverty and make a better life.

Once they accept this they are only subject to debt bondage, illegal confinement, various forms of sexual and physical abuse, and exposure to HIV in the brothels. All this would happen like in the main part, but even after this they also then face wrongful arrest as illegal immigrants if they try to escape from their “prisons” or if the brothels are raided by Thai police. The first thing like trying to escape doesn’t happen that much because even do owners of brothels say they are free to go anytime they want, they won’t be able to do it. And this is because they are more afraid of been capture without papers and mostly of all having no place where to go. Even if they try to escape but in the chance they are arrested, once arrested, the women and girls instead of having the help of immigration people, mostly all the time they would be subjected to further sexual abuse in Thai detention centers, or other forms of punishment.

After their deportation to the Thai-Burmese border this wont finished because they are often lured back into prostitution by brothel agents who play on their fear of arrest on return to Burma. The most interesting and shocking point of this is that Thai police and border patrol officials know about all this problems and actually are involved in both the trafficking and the brothel operations, but they routinely escape punishment from their governments.

Most of the brothel agents, owners, pimps and clients get to escape from punishment also, and this is because all the corruption networks that are involved in this entire situation. At the last part of the report it also presents detailed recommendations to the Thai and Burmese governments and the international community for improving the protection of the women and girls that are been abuse and with this tries to ensure the prosecution of their abusers.
