Ahhh!!! College… freedom, parties, sex, and no responsibilities. You’ve finally escaped from your prison like high school and your oppressive- controlling parents. College will be the best time of your life. Ok, now back to reality. College can be all these things, just not all the time. In order to get through your next four or five years you can never lose sight of your goals. You know, the reasons you’re really going to college. In the end its all about receiving that little, yet very expensive piece of paper that says you have what it takes to succeed not only in your career but also in life.
The most important thing to do before you go to college is to be honest with yourself. Should your really be going to college? Will college lead to a career that you have imagined yourself doing in ten years? More than anything else you have to want to go to college. You have to need it. In the past few years it seems that everyone is pressured to attend college. Kids are led to believe that they will never amount to anything if they don’t have a degree. In the end do what you love. Don’t go to college because you have to, but if it lies in the way between yourself and career that you feel you’re destined for, go for it.
Ok, you’ve decided to go to college, read on. You may have already decided what you want out of college. You probably know what field of work you would like to be in. However statistics show that you don’t. Over half of college students will change their major at least once. Your advisor will probably want to get you started on fulfilling the requirements for your major
right away. Pay little attention to his advice during your first two semesters. Take a broad range of classes. Each department usually offers survey classes. Take as many as you can. This will expose you to everything that your school has to offer. These classes serve two other important functions. First, they make for a smoother transition form high school to college, as they are generally undemanding. Second, since these classes are simple in nature it will get your GPA of to a good start.
Make school easier on yourself. Go to all your classes and write down everything that your professors say. Tests will usually be based solely on lectures. Also, resist the urge to take a day off every once
