Con Constructive
Resolved: Countries have an obligation to accept refugees fleeing from warzone.
Observation: We acknowledge that as nations and individuals, we share the responsibility to look out for each other.
Definition:
accept: take refugees into the borders and entitling them with the rights of a citizen.which excludes refugee camps since they fail to provide access to welfare and freedom of movement.
(Angela Merkel—which has already been internationally recognized)
obligation: an act or course of action to which a country is morally or legally bound
New Oxford American Dictionary
Framework: We negate with today’s resolution because we believe that there is no obligation holding any countries to any specific measure regarding the refugee issue, and that the inconsiderate action of taking refugees actually does harm for both the refugees themselves and the host nations and their citizens, not to mention how much global instability will be resulted. Thus if we can prove that accepting refugees results in more harms than goods for either citizens or refugees, we should win this debate.
Opposition’s burden: to prove when, how, why, where and in what form or by which means is the obligation of accepting refugees imposed on all countries around the world, and how accepting refugees benefits any party.
Now let’s move on to the contentions
Contention 1: Blindly letting in refugees only inflicts more suffering and tragedies on wartime refugees.
- Xenophobia and Islamophobia is targeting innocent refugees in Europe.
In Germany, xenophobia results in severe violation against non-EU refugees. Refugee shelters have been burned to the ground in Bautzen and onlookers cheered while it burned. People have also thrown live grenades into refugee shelters in a Villingen-Schwenningen hostel. In France, police and militias attacked refugees in Calais. In fact, eight cases have been filed against the police for police brutality and five more have been filed against civilian militia for violence against refugees with many more unreported.
In addition, islamophobic crimes have been increasing continuously in Europe. Just in London, hate crimes against Muslim individuals have grown by 70%. Among the more shocking findings is that Muslim women are more likely to be victims of violent physical Islamophobic crimes than men, according to the Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF).
- Fierce public backlash has prevented the only chance for refugees to get jobs and get integrated. According to a survey conducted in France, 46% of the people believe that the unemployment rate has to be lowered by restricting the influx of immigrant, meaning that local corporations may be reluctant to receive migrant workers, which, unfortunately, also render refugees out of jobs. Therefore, accepting refugees into the country fail to integrate them into the society or the economy, imposing tremendous economic burden on the host government.
Contention 2: Accepting refugees is detrimental for the host countries and their citizens from various aspects.
- Accepting refugees imposes enormous security breach on host nations.
Given that police resources have already been depleted due to the overwhelming influx of illegal refugees in a large number of countries, letting in refugees opens up a backchannel, a security breach for both refugees and citizens. Terrorism, human trafficking, underground arms trade, drug smuggling can all be sneaked into Europe easily with borders open and law enforcement vacant. This has jeopardized the security of host nations and the lives of tens of thousands of refugees and European citizens.
- Letting in refugees greatly increase the crime rates of host nations.
According to statistics from the Federal Criminal Police, Germany, the number of offenses committed by asylum seekers has increased dramatically. In 2013 it was registered 32, 495 crimes, and in 2014 - already 53, 890. That makes up a 65% increase in crimes.
A confidential report, leaked to Die Welt, reveals that Hamburg police have effectively surrendered to the migrant youths, who outnumber and overwhelm them. These Youths are very aggressive and only care about each other in their group.
The document states:
