I think that Gregory is a good person at heart , the officers conned him into doing what they wanted and acted like his friend . The officers did what they had to do use him as a servant type by doing their laundry, cooking food for them , obeying every command that they threw at him . Was he doing this out the kindness of his heart yes he was but he must of thought that by doing this he wouldn’t be executed by these men . In the aspect of Gregory he thought that they were his friends but they were not, Gregory was blindsided by friendship . They shot and killed him like a pig yes they were disgusted with the fact that he was a genuine guy and became their friend but a duty is a duty and if it was me and I had to kill a friend in a time of war then I would do so. Gregory was a honest genuine guy but also a fool for believing that he would be in a safer place with the people he called friends but in reality they were just doing their job.
If I was the narrator in this story I would’ve been nicer to him to make the death stage of life was comfortable at least gave him a last meal or something of that nature . I would of gave him a television
