I have completed my Communication Competencies Survey and I must say that it was very difficult for me not to mark all of my answers as important. I have looked over this survey and I would like to develop strategies to help me become a better team member.
I know that if I plan to become a Social Worker I know that sometimes there will be meetings or even public speaking that will take place. As a team member I have to work on reducing my nervousness when speaking in a discussion or meeting. There are ways I can improve my competency by being prepared I have to know my material. I also have to relax and rest well the night before. This will only make me better.
Effectively asking questions to clarify ideas is also an area that needs improvement. I have a problem with being the first to say something because I do not want to be the odd person in the group. I do not like to be put on the spot but note taking will help with questions to clarify ideas.
The last competency I need to work on is using parliamentary procedures effectively and fairly in meetings. There should be order one item at a time and attention given to all perspectives. Each member should be able to provide their input. There should only be one motion on the floor at a time. I realize that a meeting should have full control there should be no side tracking. I usually do not say anything because I do not like conflict. I just go with the flow of things.
