Keep Tahoe Blue
This organization was founded in 1957 with the mission to help preserve the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe. The League serves the communities not only in the immediate region of Lake Tahoe such as Northern California and Western Nevada, but also people worldwide because Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of fresh water. Specifically, the League is a “solutions-based organization” (keeptahoeblue.org) that focuses on advocating for enacting sensible environmental standards. Their research is backed by science and monitoring, while obtaining further participation in their project from community engagement, grassroots involvement, and a “collective ideology of working together to Keep Tahoe Blue” (keeptahoeblue.org). The three main purposes of this organization are to: 1) advocate to ensure strong environmental protections through innovative policy development, 2) educate as well as engage the public about how to protect Lake Tahoe, and 3) collaborate with stakeholders to find solutions to environmental challenges that are faced at Lake Tahoe. They also have four main campaigns that they are involved in, which are: combatting pollution, promoting restoration, tackling invasive species, and protecting Tahoe’s shoreline. They are heavily involved in every environmental success in Tahoe, but one of their main accomplishments was when the League persuaded policy makers to adopt an urban boundary in order to stop housing projects within the Tahoe forest boundaries.
