While doing research on Mother Teresa for my speech, I realized the immensness and vastness of her goodness. She was more loving, giving and selfless than I had known or imagined her to be. I was so inspired by her and I realized I had taken on a huge responsibility and was completely incapable & unskilled of portraying her and justly inspiring you all just as I was. I almost panicked and started researching other icons but soon realized that I owed you all a piece of what I’d learnt about her and so I’m going to try to put into words a piece of who she was and what she did so that you could take that with you in your lives. But please forgive me if I am unable to inspire you, the fault lies not in who she was but in my inability and inexperience (find another word) to rightfully portray her and her character.
Very little is known about her early life due to the fact that she was very humble and didn’t think that it mattered who she was and where she came. Of her self she said very little but she did say that she was a pencil in the hand of a writing god who is sending love letters to the world. When questioned about her origin she replied “By blood, I am Albanian; By citizenship, an Indian; By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus”.
Mother Teresa was known by different names like Angel of Mercy, Saint of the Gutters, Messenger of Love and instead of talking about her childhood and who she was and where she came from I’m going to talk about why she was called Angel of Mercy, saint of the gutters, & Messenger of Love.
Mother Teresa, clothed in a white sari with a blue border, dedicated her life to the poorest of the poor, the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, and all those people who were shunned by society and their families & were a burden. She saw the poverty and decided to remove herself from the sheltered life & the funding that the church provided and lived with the poorest of the poor, begging for them, living like them, & eventually setting up homes and shelter for them. She didn’t want just want to be the messenger she wanted to be the message. She set up many homes & shelters for the hungry, homeless, the dying, the abandoned children and even a little self sufficient village for the lepers.
She was truly an “Angel of Mercy for Many”.
She worked in India, a country so rich in culture and heritage but yet so poor. The millions that live in poverty, live in some really wretched conditions. If you sick, dying and poor, there is not enough health care provided and hospitals don’t have any space for you. Mother Teresa saw that opened a home for the dying & gave the destitutes a dignified death by taking them in & lovingly caring for them until their dying breath. Frequently she would recite the anecdote of an old man who was picked up similarly, it took three hours to clean him and then he said, “I’ve lived like an animal in the street, but I’m going to die like an angel, loved and cared for!” Along the way she pick up and save many more young and old like him.
She was truly a “Saint of the Gutters For Many”.
Now there are a lot of people and organizations out there that do the same thing. But the difference was that Mother Teresa held each person & loved him like no other till the very end. When some health organization came to her shelter for the dying, they were shocked to find that Mother Teresa and the sisters refused as per her instructions to hold lepers at arms length or to wear gloves when extracting worms from people’s bodies. She believed that no one should die without having felt love and cared for. She realized the effect of the warmth of her hand and tended not only people wounds & illnesses but most importantly thieir hearts and souls. She loved and cared for them just as she would with Christ himself. She believed that being unwanted, unloved, uncared for and forgotten by everybody is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than anything else in this world.
So she was truly a “Messenger of Love”.
She made and saw no difference between the rich and the poor and you would think that because she chose to live with and like the poor and work with the poor that it might have brought her into conflict with the rich and
