The argument over whether or not marijuana should be legal has been a big debate over the last decade. There are many who are for it being legal and a lot that are totally against the idea. Me personally, I don’t see the problem with marijuana being legal in the United States. All though some may not agree with what I believe in I do have my reasons for why I think marijuana should be legalize in some of the states if not all of them.
Marijuana has always been associated with crime and many other things that are society does not approve of. This has a lot to do with why I believe people do not want it to be legal in the states. Everyone always reads about people getting in trouble with the law and having possession of marijuana (pot) and automatically assumes that the pot made them act the way they did or commit the crime. Pot does not have a mind controlling effect when consumed; it tends to calm one down and put them into a relaxed mood. There have been debates over the effects marijuana has on someone and when smoked.
Many people argue that when people smoke pot they tend to become very lazy and not motivated to do anything. It also tends to make one hungrier then they usually would be most people call this “the munchies”. These statements are very true in most situations and are considered to not be very healthy for someone. Being lazy and not wanting to do anything, people believe that to much of that behavior can lead to one not using there brain as much. Smoking also has been linked to killing brain cells which make people lose memory or have short term memory. Use of marijuana after a long period of time may make one tend to forget things easier or store information as good as if they did not smoke. Another strong argument some may have against marijuana is the eating habits you get when you smoke. Studies have shown that people that smoke pot are more then likely to be overweight and not have very healthy eating habits. People are concerned with this issue because are society is very overweight already because of fast food and bad eating habits and believe that marijuana would only contribute to the growing population of obese Americans.
There are also some positives to why pot should be legal in the United States. Over the past decade there have been more deaths cause from alcohol related accidents then marijuana. There have also been fewer car accidents over the last decade associated with marijuana then alcohol. Pot also can be a very good stress reliever, it has been proven that ones stress level decreases while smoking marijuana. I strongly believe that pot does not propose a serious threat to this country; I believe that people have a bad outlook on the substance. When people smoke they tend to concentrate more with the task at hand, it tends to clear peoples minds and helps them to focus with their work. Another positive to legalizing marijuana is to cut the expenses that are spent every year on trying to stop the smuggling of the drug into this country. This would also cut Americans taxes each year, which I’m sure no one would complain about that. If the government would decide to legalize the substance they could control the young generation from getting a hold of it by setting a legal age for possession of
