Simplified Characters Are Better Than Traditional Characters
Simplified Characters are Better than Traditional Characters
There are two different opinions on the debate about traditional characters and simplified characters. With a beautiful and appreciable appearance, traditional characters are regarded as a better way to inherit Chinese traditional culture and promote national unity. However, simplified characters are supported by others for its efficiency and accessibility. Moreover, simplified characters can also serve the function of protecting and developing traditional culture. From my point of view, using simplified characters is the better choice for the following reasons.
First, simplified characters have more advantages in efficient communication. As we know, characters are just language symbols, which means that the practical value is more important than external form. Undoubtedly, simplified characters are more easier to learn and use, so they benefit communication efficiency more. Second, many Chinese classic works have their own simplified-character versions now. That means people can still experience the charm of those works in an easier way. At the same time, this form can also convey the traditional culture to people, so traditional characters don't have the unique function of it. Last but not least, simplified characters have been a dominate writing form of most Chinese people. If traditional characters are revived, many people's lives would be affected and most of them would need a period of time to adopt to it. This fact would lead to some negative results before it could have positive effects on national reunification.
