CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background/Rationale of the Study
The construction of the new Rose Memorial Auditorium of Central Philippine University was conceived on February 1993, two years after the old Rose Memorial Hall has been burnt down by fire. The new Rose Memorial Auditorium was inaugurated on September 2, 1995. It extends at a length of 62 meters from the first step of the entrance stairs to the rear portion of the hall. It is 44 meters in width and 17.5 meters high from the ground floor to the roof.
Since then, the auditorium has been the place for big gatherings and activities of the school. There is no any system or program installed in it, electronic or mechanical, which can at least count the number of attendees in every event.
Inspired by that problem, the group is proposing a computer-based program using Visual Basic® language that will display the current number of people inside the hall, and the number of vacancy based on the set crowd size limit. A database for information storage is added as feature to maximize the usefulness of the program.
Problem Definition
The Rose Memorial Auditorium has been the venue for conferences, concerts and various gatherings of Central Philippine University. But when these events take place, there is no instantaneous information regarding the current number of people that entered the hall because there is no any system or program that can do the counting. Thus, there is no transient advice for everyone about the current crowd size inside the hall. Retrieving important information about events held in the auditorium, especially the past ones, is also difficult because mostly, printed souvenir programs are not stored into files but are rather lost after some time.
Addressing these problems, the group perceives the Visual Basic® language based real-time crowd size display as a solution.
With the proposed project, the general public will now be advised about the current crowd size or number of people inside the auditorium. For the management of Rose Memorial Auditorium, event organizers, and other interested parties, the system database would be helpful in giving them important information such as the number of attendees of events, and other details. Even information regarding past events can easily be obtained because of the databasing capabilities of the system.
Objectives
Main Objective
The aim of the project is to design and construct a working prototype of a computer-based real-time crowd size display for the Rose Memorial Auditorium of Central Philippine University using the Visual Basic ® 6 language.
Specific Objectives
1. The designers intend to develop a computer-based system using Visual Basic® program that will accept inputs from infrared detectors installed in the main entrance and exit doors of the auditorium to determine current crowd size, and vacancy inside the hall with respect to the set crowd size limit.
2. To design a user friendly interface in editing desired crowd size limit, and encoding other important details of the event such as theme, guests, sponsors, speakers, etc.
3. To design a program that will display the current crowd size and vacant seats in the monitor of the computer.
4. To construct a working prototype of the developed computer-based real-time crowd size display using the Visual Basic® 6 language.
Significance of the Study
The project intends to provide a computer-based real-time crowd size display for the Rose Memorial Auditorium of Central Philippine University using Visual Basic® language.
The project aims to benefit the following:
The Management of the Rose Memorial Auditorium
The system will be able to display the current number of attendees, and store other relevant information regarding any event held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium. This way, the management of the Rose Memorial Auditorium will be
