Essay title: Analysis of Matilde from "the Neclace"
The necklace tells the story of Matilde, an ambitious woman who is not content with the live she lives and dreams of a life of fame and fortune as the narrator explains, “She suffered constantly, feeling herself destined for al delicacies and luxuries.” Yet one night while trying to pretend to live this life she by accident is lead into living a life much worse that the one she had. Trough out the story Matilde shows to be a manipulative person and uses other people to get what she wants. She seems to be a good person at heart but some of her actions make me think that in fact she is not.
To my understanding Matilde did not have the horrible life she believes she has in fact she even had maid “They dismissed the maid; they changed their address; they rented an attic flat” to me it seem that having a maid is a luxury even at the times Matilde lived in. It is this that makes me wonder if Matilde is just plain selfish and only cares about herself. Later in the story, Matilde proves me wrong by sticking by her husband and helping him repay the debt, “Mrs. Loisel discovered the horrible life of the needy. She did her share, however, completely heroically.” to me these are not actions of a selfish person.
