Essay title: Anemia

Anemia (ah-NEE-mee-ah) is a medical condition that occurs when a person does not have enough red blood cells. Red blood cells are important because they contain hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's muscles and organs. The body requires oxygen for energy. Therefore, when you are anemic, you may feel tired mentally and physically.

Symptoms of anemia include:7,8,9,10

· Fatigue

· Weakness

· Shortness of breath

· Dizziness or fainting

· Pale skin, including decreased pinkness of the lips, gums, lining of the eyelids, nail beds and palms

· Rapid heart beat (tachycardia)

· Feeling cold

· Sadness or depression

· Decreased sexual function

· Difficulty sleeping

Decreased appetite Anemia is a medical condition that occurs when a person does not have enough red blood cells. Possible causes of anemia include:

· Blood loss3

· Diseases3,12

· Medication side effects12

· Poor diet

· Vitamin or iron deficiencies13

· Chronic Renal Insufficiency

Symptoms - Metabolic Very great/moderate/major unexplained weight loss

Symptoms - Nails Nails turning white towards the ends Leukonychia (partial or completely white nails) is a sign of renal failure.

Symptoms - Skin - General Itchy skin

Circulation Anemia (Iron deficiency) Patients with CRF often suffer from complications such as anemia, which occurs when failing kidneys no longer produce sufficient erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells
