Brats: Our Journey Home

In the movie Brats: Our Journey Home, the main focus was on families in the military. Individuals who were in the army, lived a whole different culture from the average Americans. This filmed showed the pros and cons of the military life. In this review, I will be talking about the benefits, downfalls, and the outcome of military men who came back from war.

Serving for your country is a huge honor, and people in the military do benefit from joining. When you join, you and your family are guaranteed great medical insurance for life. But, children are limited only until a certain age. You have the opportunity to travel around the world. When military individuals get based outside the country, they are surrounded with barbwires, and full security. Individuals in the service get to live in base, where housing is affordable and cheap. Living in base, is viewed as a safe environment, where children get the proper education and great after school activities. People get to shop in the commissary and PX, where you get things cheaper and no tax. The great thing about being in the military is color is not an issue. You can be white, black, brown, or yellow, and you are viewed as equal. They military has a zero percent tolerance for individuals who make racial remarks. They are usually from the lower social class, so for them to join gives them an opportunity for a brighter future.

What I noticed when watching them film was they were very family oriented. They valued family highly, kids got good grades, they were in after school activities, and the moms were at home. I perceived them as the “American family”, which in my eyes was perfect. But little did I know it was all just a show.

Although living the military life gives family great benefits, there is also a down fall. Many families who travel around the world don’t stay at one place for a long time. So, children have a hard time adapting to their new environment. Every time they moved, they have to leave their friends behind and find for new one. This can be a very difficult time for family especially for teens. Another downfall for moving is buying new things
