Essay title: Characters Coming into Our Lives for a Reason
The Curious Incident of the Dog at the Night-time by Mark Haddon is about an autistic boy named Christopher Francis Boone, who tries to solve a murder mystery of Mrs. ShearЎЇs dog, Wellington. However, during his investigation, there are obstacles he must pass, including the truth about his mother and the murderer of Wellington. After finding about these things, his life shatters into piece due to confusion, but in the end, he manages to get his life back to normal. This book gives us a good example about both major and minor characters coming into our lives for a reason; they either have a lesson, a personal story, or have been exposed to another side to humanity.
Christopher Francis Boone is a unique boy because he knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7057. He relates well to animals but does not understand human emotions, along with metaphors and jokes. He also hates the colors yellow and brown.
In the beginning of the book, Ed Boone, ChristopherЎЇs father takes care of him with endless efforts. But due to one of ChristopherЎЇs behavioral problems, the father shows his love by spreading his fingers in a fan. Ў°He held up his right hand and spread his fingers out in a fan. I held up my left hand and spread my fingers out in a fanЎ¦sometimes Father wants to give me a hug, but I do not like hugging people so we do this instead, and it means that he loves me.Ў± (pg.16) In the beginning, Christopher and his father love each other and trust each other without a doubt. However, as the story continues, the trust begins to decrease after finding out about his supposedly dead mother. ChristopherЎЇs father is definitely a main character who seems to be important because he exposes another side of humanity to his son. Ў°I did it for your good, Christopher. Honestly I did. I never meant to lie. I just thoughtЎ¦I just thought it was better if you didnЎЇt knowЎ¦thatЎ¦thatЎ¦I didnЎЇt mean toЎ¦I was going to show them to you when you were older.Ў± (pg. 114) His father also says, Ў°We all make mistakes, Christopher. You, me, your mum, everyone. And sometimes theyЎЇre really big mistakes. WeЎЇre only human.Ў± (pg. 122) In these two quotes, ChristopherЎЇs father tries to explain why he was hiding the secrets to his son. Based on his speeches, it is noticeable that his father was trying to hide the secrets through guilt. This is another side to humanity for Christopher because he does not understand guilt.
There is also a minor character who talks to Christopher and exposes another side to humanity. Reverend Peters is a vicar and the wife of Mrs. Peters, the art teacher. Reverend Peters talks about the existence
