Essay title: Cheater
Hilary Clinton recently gave a speech at the Ohio primary. She said that Ohio would be the state to turn around the presidential election, and that it’s not a question of fulfilling a dream, it is saying we will do it. While her speech was very powerful to the masses, she had many fallacies in it.
The first one I recognized was a faulty causality. She states, “…You know what they say: As Ohio goes, so goes the nation…” This is a faulty causality because she is saying if Ohio goes one way towards one particular nominee, the nation will follow. Another one I saw was begging the question. Hilary says, “…Voters faced a critical question: Who is tested and ready to be commander-in-chief on day one? And who knows how to turn our economy around? Because we sure do need it…” She basing her assumption on that all voters are going to the polls with just these two questions in mind, and picking a nominee. I think that some voters are going to the polls with more than just this on their minds. One last fallacy I saw was ad hominem. She said, “…America needs a president who's ready to lead, ready to stand up for what's right even when it's hard. And after seven long years of George W. Bush... we sure are ready for a president who will be a fighter, a doer, and a champion for the American people again.” I think that she is attacking President Bush saying that he isn’t a fighter, doer, or champion for the American people.
I think that Hilary’s proposals are justified in some ways. One is the need for healthcare is great, but I feel that she is making another promise to us, just like every other politician. I think she used a lot of generalizations in her speech that doesn’t pertain to the general public, or young people of America. I feel that the election of 2008 is focusing more on the problems at hand like the economy, and the war in Iraq. While
