ABC, Inc. did not provide enough supervision and guidance for their new campus recruiter, Carl Robins, who has only been in his position for six months. Monica Carrolls, as the operations supervisor, should have followed up on her conversation with Carl instead of assuming that everything was ready for the orientation training. As a new recruiter, Carl should have started preparing earlier for the orientation training to make sure everything could be completed in time and ask for help if he needed it. Because of lack of planning and scheduling, the training must be postponed until July when the training room will be available.
Background
ABC, Inc. had a new campus recruiter, Carl Robins, with only six months on the job. His first recruitment effort was successful with 15 new trainees hired in early April. He scheduled his first new hire orientation for June 15, planning on having all new hires working by July.
On May 15, Monica Carrolls, the operations supervisor, contact Carl concerning the training schedule, orientation, manuals, policy booklets, physicals, drug tests and other issues, which Carl would coordinate for the new hires. Monica believed Carl when he assured her everything would be arranged on time.
After Memorial Day, Carl pulled out his new trainee files to prepare the final paperwork needed for orientation on June 15. When he looked through the files, some of the applications were not complete and transcripts were missing. He also realized that none of the trainees had been sent to the clinic for the mandatory drug screen.
After further investigation, Carl discovered that he did not have enough orientation manuals and pages were missing from the three copies that he did have. He also found out that the training room was reserved for the whole month of June, including the day he had scheduled.
Key Problems:
In review this case, the findings are a clear lack of supervision and follow up for newer employees. There also was not a set timeline for Carl to follow and he failed to review the files and starts to work with the new hire training day information in a timely manner. In order to complete all the requirements in a timely manner, Carl need to start this project sooner and possibly have assistance from more experienced members of ABC, Inc.
Alternative Plans:
There are various solutions to Carl’s problems. The first problem, the training room is already booked for June 15. The easiest solution for this problem would probably be to move the training date to the first week in July when the training room would be available. Another solution would be to rent a training room at another facility to accommodate the training needs for June 15.
Carl’s second problem was forgetting to set up appointments for the new trainees to be tested for drugs. To resolve this problem, he could contact the clinic and see if he could schedule all the trainees to be tested within the next week. Then he would need to call all the new trainees and have them come in and review their files, making corrections to the applications and bringing in their transcripts.
Another problem would be the lack of a complete orientation training
