Public Relations can be explained as any ongoing activity to ensure the said company has a strong public image. Public relations activities can include helping the public to understand the company and its products. Often, public relations are conducted through media (i.e. newspapers, television, magazines, etc.). Public relations is actually considered one of the primary activities utilized by companies for promotion of the company and products.

The great thing about public relations is that it differs in everyone’s mind as to what they feel it is. You can ask anyone anywhere about their idea of public relations and you can bet that you will most likely get a different answer every time. It is difficult to completely define public relations, as it seems to encompass a large range of varying philosophies and techniques. The best thing to remember is that public relations can add a lot to a company’s marketing blend, but finding the right tools and right team to make it work is crucial.

There are certain types of things you need to look for when seeking the assistance of a firm for your public relations:

• Big agency experience without big agency overhead. Find a company willing to help you just as much as a prospective client as they would if you were their client.

• Find a company willing to feel the cheers and jeers of your company.

• Integrity!

• Develop a more sophisticated image and widespread recognition for the company and its product through working as a multi-disciplined team.

Many of these concepts seem basic, but it is the basic necessities that will make the difference in your image. Image is key to the marketing and public image. Take for example Barry Bonds. Anyone who is at all involved in the sport of Major League Baseball understand the controversy surrounding Barry today. There is now talk that the records he has accomplished in his illustrious 20 year major league career should be nullified.
