Essay title: Hamlet

Hamlet is the play and Hamlet is the character. The play starts out with the death of the king, Hamlet’s father. Only a month later Hamlet’s mother re-marries the king’s brother. She does not even seem to be disturbed at the fact her husband had died not too long ago. The night castle guards later came to Hamlet to tell him about a ghost appearing late at night at the castle top three nights in a row. Hamlet spends one night on the rooftop and speaks to the ghost of his father. He learns that his father was murdered by his own brother so that he could take his place to be king. He wants Hamlet to seek his revenge.

The new king and Hamlet’s mother start to wonder what is wrong with the young man. The king, wanting to find out what is wrong, sets up Ophelia to talk to Hamlet while he would listen in. Ophelia is Hamlet’s love, so the king thinks he would speak to her. Hamlet is smarter than this trap, he knows what is going on, so instead of talking to Ophelia he argues with her. Even his two best friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were sent for by the king and queen. Nor did they succeed in finding out anything about Hamlet. They were caught by Hamlet, after he had demanded them to tell him if they were sent for. He knew it.

Later in the play the king starts to worry about being killed by Hamlet because of the little accident that happened with Hamlet killing Polonius thinking
