Essay title: Japan Whaling Really Scientific Essay

Japan claims that their whaling is for scientific purposes only, the number of whales are decreasing from our oceans because of this scientific investigation which is very much questionable that Japan are claiming that they are doing. Japanese whaling has been a international problem for many years. There was a ban on whaling but Japan thought it did not count for scientific research. Whales are considered as a luxury meat to eat in Japan and the prices of whale food in shops has gone up. The belief is that Japan is whaling for the meat and not for the scientific research. Scientific research and engineering has a very important role in the 21st century but even science has its boundaries.

In 1986, the international whaling committee passed a ban on whaling. Japan did not follow the ban on whaling rule, claiming that it was for scientific research. Not only that they were importing whale meat from Norway because of its lower prices there, the whale ban was executed to make all whaling illegal which Japan failed to recognise. 400 whales were killed a year and most of the meat ending up in fish markets and restaurants. The price of whale meat has increased in the past few years in Japan showing the excessive whaling from the Japanese, but why are there prices? If the whaling is considered scientific research then why sell the delicious, nice and edible parts to restaurants?

Whale meat is considered a luxury food in Japan. It has been eaten and loved and demanded by the Japanese for many years. In recent times the prices for whale meat has gone up in Japanese shops. Not only this fact can be used to question the Japanese and their scientific research on whales it also shows that the number of whales is decreasing from our oceans. Japan just doesn’t want to give up a major industry that the rest of the world has given up because of the sake of the whales. The rule was passed and the Japanese should comply with the ban. Anyone can see passed the Japanese lies about their ‘scientific research’.

The Japanese have overcome the ban on whaling and in December last year they have entered Antarctica to start the whaling season. Anti-whaling ships, the Farley Mowat and Arctic Sunrise headed by The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Green Peace were attempting to interfere with a Japanese whaling fleet comprised of the Nisshin Maru and six other whaling vessels. 900 whales are thought to be caught by the end of the season not only
