Although Kauai and Colonial Beach are both beaches, I'd take the beaches of Kauai, Hawaii, over my home town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, any day. In the summer of 2003 I took a vacation to Kauai, and it was almost impossible to compare it to Colonial Beach. There are so many things that are different about the two: the people, the scenery, the climate, the activities, and just the way of life. About the only thing that is the same about the two is the fact that they are both beaches.
The first thing that I noticed was different about Kauai was when I stepped off of the airplane and all the people around me were smiling. In Colonial beach you're surrounded by crotchety old people and fat mothers yelling at their fat little kids. Everybody in Kauai was so care-free and had nothing but nice things to say to you. You're more likely to get the finger or cussed out by someone in Colonial Beach.
As soon as I got to the condo where I was staying and walked the few feet down to the ocean, I realized this was nothing like home. The beautiful mountains swept down to the white, sandy beaches. There was nothing but crystal clear water for miles, beautiful tropical flowers and fish, gorgeous Hawaiian guys surfing on the enormous waves, and the most breathtaking sunset I'd ever seen.
