Essay title: Ludwig Van Beethoven's 5th Symphony
Ludwig Van Beethoven’s 5th Symphony
Introduction
This is where you will present the fruits of your research on your chosen composer and piece. Give the composer’s dates and talk about his education, place of residence, and major works in his output. Beyond these essential facts you may add more details of his life to further illustrate who he was and what he did. This section should be a minimum of one full page.
Be sure to follow a logical progression of events. Have someone proofread your work before submitting it.
Observation
In this section you will describe the piece of music you listened to in as much detail as possible. Refer to your guideline sheet and Aural Analysis Sheet for help. Remember to give both an objective as well as a subjective analysis of the piece.
When you describe the piece objectively, try to follow the progression of the music as it unfolds through time. What is the beginning like? What happens as it moves towards the middle? And the end? What features of the music stand out most? Are there recurring ideas? Be specific when you describe things; do not say, “the music was loud and then soft” without specifying exactly where these changes occur. In short, be precise and clear.
When you describe the piece subjectively you have a lot more freedom. Describe ideas and emotions you would associate with the piece. Perhaps you can visualize a story to go with the music. What you envision may be nothing near what the composer had in mind when he wrote the piece, but that’s fine. The beauty of art is that it is open to many interpretations.
This section should be at least one full page in length.
Conclusion
Your conclusion should wrap everything up and tie it with a bow. What did you find that you did not expect? Would you seek out other music by this composer or did you really hate it? Can you see how this music fits in with other music from the same period?
This section should be one-half page long.
