PostScript printers are designed to separate the colours of an image into CMYK, allowing the colours to be as real as possible. An Encapsulated PostScript file allows this same process for final output. Therefore this file is automatically read by the printer and cannot be corrupted by them, allowing further security of incorruptible colours and data. Where JPEG acts as a preview for a TIFF file (also a final output file format) an EPS file includes the preview with the data of the actual image. EPS is also ideal for email as it is a small file.

Colour gamut

Colour gamut is the set of colours that can be produced within a colour system. There are two systems, additive and subtractive, which respectively refer to monitor and print, respectively. The problem is that not all the colours can be produced by both systems. When this is not checked it may result in a faulty print as the colour was found in the additive system but not in the subtractive system.

Vector image

These images are made up of lines and curves that are connected by a series of nodes. Every node is kept in position with a mathematical description. The math also notes all other aspects of the image; the length of line, its location and so forth. These images can be freely scaled with no loss of quality because the mathematical descriptions automatically multiply to retain a crisp line. This makes it ideal for large-scale print. Another plus is that when the image is called up, only the number in the equation is changed and therefore the file size stays the same, making it ideal for email.

Raster image

When an image is scanned in it is converted to pixels, creating a raster image. This format is also known as a bitmap as the pixels are bits of information, which in turn form a map to create the picture. The resolution is determined by the amount of information is given, he more information the bigger or more dense the picture is. The information is represented by pixels.
