Essay title: Myspace - a Place to Advertise Sex?
MySpace a Place to Advertise Sex?
In the Article "MySpace Isn't for Advertisers, It's for Sex" by Pesach Lattin he states that he and parents feel all users on MySpace are all vulnerable targets to get raped, that MySpace is a "sex-finder" website that is unsafe for children and that the website is a perfect trap to catch kids at parties and they feel that classifying yourself as a gay or a lesbian is bad.
I personally disagree with the article. I feel that MySpace is perfectly safe website if you know how to use it and what you are doing. I feel that if you don't feel safe using MySpace you don't need to. No one is forcing you to use it, and also you have the freedom and the power to control what you are doing on the website.
I don't think that anyone who has a MySpace should feel that they are vulnerable targets of rape. I think that children and all users should know whom they are talking to and not just be interacting with strangers that they don't know. Yes while on MySpace you can interact with strangers but you don't have to if you feel that it is not the appropriate thing to do or if you don't feel safe doing it. You can talk to your friends and keep in touch with family and peers who move away. I know that I personally and my friends use it to keep in touch with people we already know. There are ways to prevent being targeted as a rape vicitm and that is use MySpace's services such as blocking unknown members or setting your profile to not give out a lot of information about yourself. If you don't know whom you are talking to then block them or don't approve them as your friend so you don't stay in contact with them.
MySpace isn't a "sex-finder" website. MySpace is a website in which you choose whom you are talking to and who you are becoming friends with. If you are scared that people are out there just being creepy and looking up little girls to get a fix on their sick fantasies you can set your profile to where the people that are looking at your page are only people that you approve as your friends so you know exactly who is looking at your page.
As for the cops and parents using MySpace to spy on their
