Essay title: Pulling the Plug

I have mixed opinions on pulling the plug on people. I think that if the doctors are a hundred percent sure that the person has no chance in getting any better or no chance in coming back and functioning normally and if they know for a fact that the person is one hundred percent brain dead then it is okay to pull the plug. On the other hand, if they aren’t positive, I think that unless they have a written consent of the person saying that that is what they would want to be done in a situation like that, then I think it is wrong. If twenty years pass and there is still no signs of progress, then I can see pulling the plug. If it has only been five to ten years, I feel like there could still be a chance. It would be devastating to pull the plug and then do an autopsy and find out that the person had a chance of coming back in the future.

In Michael’s case, for instance, I think Mary was full of it. She has no proof that Michael really would have wanted to die in the situation. All Mary had was her word. Plus, she had another romantic relationship going on for the past year and a half and she refused to divorce Michael. I feel like she wants to marry this new guy and she also wants to receive the money, and this is the reason she will not divorce or give up her guardianship. I think that his sister should have gained guardianship over him because she had nothing to gain financial wise, which makes me think she was really caring about her brother. If the rest of his family was willing to take care of him and stick it out, then they should be able to do that. Mary says she wants to respect Michaels wish (supposedly) to die, but is she respecting him by having the affair? I think not.
