Essay title: Steroids

INTRO

Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire… What do these men have in common???

- Besides being Multi-Millionaires, masterful home-run hitters, & world wide known athletes

- Caught in one of the biggest controversies in sports history… STEROIDS

Baseball is known to the world as America’s favorite pastime, and kids look up to these men from the moment they are strong enough to pick up a bat or throw a ball. In an age when practice, agility, and talent sometimes take a back-seat to strength and power some athletes look to performance enhancers to give them an edge…

This is one of the many reasons that led to my choice on this speech topic which may sooner than you think become one of the biggest controversies in America, steroid use by high school and junior high athletes.

(One thing I’ve learned in life is there are two sides to every argument and Steroids are no different…)

BODY

Some people say that pre-college steroid use is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be… Steroids add an edge to every level of athletic competition that could never be reached with mere practice and training.

If steroids were legal, think of the level of play that we could see at every sporting event!

Ex. Ray Lewis-linebacker Baltimore Ravens (already went on trial for murder)

Ron Artest-guard Indiana Pacers (jumped into the stands last year to fight fans)

Mike Tyson- ( who cares if he had roid rage)

These guys would be amazing!!!

One prime example of what steroids can do would be Lyle Alzado, a long time defensive lineman of the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos. Alzado himself was quoted as saying, “I came out of high school a below average player and began taking steroids at the age of 19. They are directly attributed to me being the player I was.”

Ben Johnson- Canadian Sprinter admitted to taking steroids when he shattered Carl Lewis’ 100M dash record… Steroids made him so much faster

Steroids make people better all around athletes by helping them to reach strength goals with would have never been possible without… Letting kids start in junior high and high school would simply let them reach their peak faster and enjoy the effects longer.

(With all these success stories and examples how could we go wrong with steroids? No testing policies and all this fame and glory for the taking, let’s get the edge!)

Pot- NO, Cocaine- NO, Speed- NO, maybe Alcohol- NO… Steroids are the fastest growing drug used by high school kids today. All the so called benefits I listed before plus no testing policy in place to get caught, Why not use them??

That is just like telling the kids it is okay, lets just hand them out in the lunch line, What is the big deal? So
