Summer of Fear is a mystery novel written by Lois Duncan. The main character in this book is Rachel. She is a teenager that at the beginning of the book is very satisfied with her life. Rachel has parents that she is close to, a boyfriend that she has known for a long time, an older brother that has never had a girlfriend, and a little brother. When Julia comes this all changes.
Rachel’s family just received news that Rachel’s Aunt and Uncle had died in a car accident. Their daughter, Julia, has to come live with Rachel’s family. As soon as Julia arrives Rachel gets a feeling of evil. She has pitch black eyes that seem to be bottomless pits. Never the less Julia seems nice and rooms with Rachel.
During the time that Julia stayed there very strange things started to happen. Peter fell in love with Julia extremely quickly. The dog attacked Julia for no apparent reason. A few days later he died. Rachel made a dress that didn’t go with her looks or even fit her. It looked perfect on Julia. The morning of the dance Rachel breaks out with a bad case of hives. Julia goes to the dance with Rachel’s boyfriend and in the dress that Rachel made. Rachel finds some suspicious stuff in Julia drawer. She goes to the neighbor, which happens to be a professor at a university on paranormal occurrences. This visit causes her to think that Julia is a witch. Before she could get the professor’s help in convincing her parents Julia uses her powers to put him in a coma. She presents this information to her family, and it isn’t taken well. Her
