The Jane Goodall Institute

The Jane Goodall Institute is a non profit organization that was founded in 1977 by Dr. Jane Goodall and Princess di San Faustino. The mission of the Institute is to advance the power of individuals to take informed and compassionate action to improve the environment of all living things. Initially the Institute’s day to day operations were handled by board members and volunteers working out of their homes. Today the institute is known worldwide through reaching out to people in all places, having organized activities, holding lectures, conferences and simply the research Jane Goodall and her team have conducted.

The Jane Goodall Institute focuses their efforts on increasing primate habitat conservation, awareness, support and training issues related to our relationships with each other, the environment and animals. The main objective is to expand non-invasive research programs on chimpanzees, primates and to promote activities that ensure the well-being of chimpanzees and the welfare of all primates in general. The Institute attempts to reach their goals by building dynamic relationships with world leading companies in social responsibility.

The most interesting of Jane Goodall’s lifelong mission of research was when she spent a large amount of time in the Gombe Forest. Many people were skeptical about this journey being that the risks were so great. There were chances that the chimpanzees would attack Jane while she was present with them, there was always the chance that the local people would not accept Jane being there and of course the simple risk of Jane getting sick. However, she did proceed on with her research mission and it wasn’t very successful in the beginning. The chimpanzees would leave the area as soon they knew she was around. Jane started to just go to a mountaintop and use her binoculars and watch the chimpanzees from a distance. She would spend plenty of time on this mountain, just her, her binoculars, and some tinned food. After a while of being persistent and patiently kind, the chimpanzees learned to trust her. As soon as Jane realized the chimpanzees eat meat and, make and use tools, she knew there would be no problem for funding this project. She spent a lot of time there with the chimpanzees, and took in a lot of research that eventually paved the way for her future endeavors of the Jane Goodall Institute.

The Jane Goodall Institute puts on a lot of activities that are all small programs that attempt to reach the bigger goals by taking care of individual issues one at a time.
