About the Author

• His mother taught Farsi and history at a large high school in Kabul.

• They chose not to return to Afghanistan because communists had seized power through a bloody coup.

• Instead of returning to Afghanistan, the Hosseini’s were granted political asylum by the United States and settled in San Jose, California.

• His father worked for the Afghanistan Foreign Ministry.

• His father worked for the Embassy of Afghanistan.

• His family lived in three different countries within the course of ten years.

• Hosseini graduated from Independence High School in San Jose in 1984 and enrolled at Santa Clara University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1988.
