The New Deal was Roosevelt’s program for ending the depression and repairing the economy. It consisted of three parts: Relief, Recovery, and Reform. It brought forth the alphabet soup agencies.

F.E.R.A.

Federal emergency relief (F.E.R.A.). The F.E.R.A. gave an estimated $500 million to families in need. It was the first of Roosevelt’s major relief program, it was set up to provide assistance to the unemployed and their families and the organization itself employed over 20 million people.

C.C.C.

Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.). Gave young men jobs working in the forests and national parks. Over three million young men were involved in the most popular experiment of the New Deal.

W.P.A.

The Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). The W.P.A. put men to work building dams, schools and highways. It hired artists, musicians, actors, and historians. It created over 5,000 jobs for artists and produced over 225,000 works of art for the American people.

N.R.A.

National Recovery Administration (N.R.A.). Corporations and businesses need to establish prices and wages (failed). Companies who participated showed a Blue Eagle in their window.

A.A.A.

Agricultural Adjustment Act (A.A.A.). Government pays farmers to stop planting crops therefore raising prices. In 1936 the Supreme Court declared important sections of the act invalid.

Social Security

Old age pension in which both the employee and employer pay in. FDR calculated how much social security the American people, and the economy, would accept, and got the most progressive law anyone could reasonably have expected in 1935.

Wagner Act

The Wagner Act also known as the N.L.R.A.. It basically gives labor unions the right to exist. Originally the act was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court but after a few modifications was always challenged but was upheld by the courts as constitutional.

F.D.I.C.

Federal Deposit Insured Co. (F.D.I.C.). The F.D.I.C. made the money in the bank insured. Provide insurance coverage for bank deposits up to $100,000.

Tennessee Valley Authority (T.V.A.). Federal government built dams on the Tennessee River to create electricity and provide irrigation and flood control. TVA was instructed
