The Pearl Maiden

The Pearl Maiden by S ir H. Rider Haggard is the story of Miriam, A young Christian women living in the roman empire during the first century after Christ.

Rachel, mother of Miriam, facing hardship by the persecution of the Romans after Christians brushes with death as the Romans by decree of Herod Agrippa, king of all Palestine, attempt to kill her in a Syrian amphitheater for sport, but as all the prayers of the Christians reach God, He makes king Agrippa ill,

So ill he dies later that night, as this reaches the amphitheater, the crowd, gathered to watch the games subdues a riot after the Christians witch allows Rachel and her hand maiden, Nehusta an Arab to escape into Syria.

Using a merchant by the name of Amram, They board a boat bound for Alexandria, A boat that will never reach its destination, and witch will see the death of Rachel and the birth of Miriam.

After giving birth to Miriam Rachel dies on a sinking ship, witch forces Nehusta to flee to land and when she reaches land she takes Miriam to be raised as her mother requested.
