Essay title: Their Eyes Were Watching

Throughout life, everyone comes in contact with numerous people who have some sort of impact on them. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie comes in contact with many people who have a powerful affect on her. Each impact on a person plays a huge part in shaping who they will eventually become. While some impacts are bigger than others, there is always a particular experience that stands out in one’s mind. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Phoebe has an affect on Janie by simply being the best friend she can. Similar to Phoebe, my best friend Michelle has had a significant impact on me throughout life.

Michelle and I have been best friends for about ten years. We have been through a lot together and she has always supported me and helped me through everything. It was a few months before the eighth grade was over when I found out that I was going to be moving from New York to North Carolina on June 30th. I didn’t fully understand the extent of the situation until my dad started to explain to me the circumstances. He informed me about the distance between the two states and made it clear that I was only going to get to come back to New York on rare occasions. The more I thought about the situation the more upset I became. I couldn’t bear to think about leaving my town, my friends and most of my relatives as well. As I was watching my life change, and having no power to do much about it, I realized that I was not prepared for what was about to happen. Being put in this situation, I felt there was only one person I could turn to for support. Despite the situation, Michelle always knew how to cheer me up and assure me that things were going to be okay. She gave her word that not even five hundred and fifty miles could come between our friendship. Michelle was the only person who truly understood the reality of the situation. I could talk to her about anything and she would always know just what to say. As time went on, she gave me advice on how to handle the circumstances and
