Essay title: To Kill a Mockingbird

Have you ever seen someone been bullied? Have you ever seen the person being bullied stand up to the bully? The person being bullied knows he/she can get beat up, but they stand up to the bully because they have courage. According to Dictionary.com, courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. In other words, courage is when you face your fears, danger, pain, etc. For example, when someone is being bullied, the person being bullied stood up to the bully when he knew he could have gotten hurt. Courage would also be when we stand up for something and we know that there could be painful consequences. Courage was evident in To Kill a Mockingbird and it can still be seen today.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is shown throughout the story with mostly Scout and Jem. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem shows courage when he refuses to do what Atticus had told him to do. Atticus told Jem to take Scout and Dill home because he didn't want them to get hurt. Atticus was in front of the Macomb Jail when Mr. Cunningham and his mob came. They were looking for Tom Robinson. Atticus ordered Jem to go home, but Jem shook his head. He refused to leave because he knew he would leave his father in great danger and he would feel guilty about it. Atticus was surprised that Jem wouldn't go. Another example would be when Jem went to the Radley house. Jem was scared of the Radley (especially Boo Radley) because there was a rumor that he stabbed his dad with some scissors. Scout and Dill were also afraid and Jem wanted to prove he's not afraid of it by touching it. Jem ran and touched the Radley House. After that, he also went when Scout accidentally rolled over there in a tire. They were playing by rolling in a tire, but Scout bumped right into the Radley House.

Courage was also seen when I stood up for my little cousins. I was about seven years old when my six year old cousins came
