Walking two Moons takes place in the early 1980s or 1990s, the setting mostly takes place on the road from Ohio and Idaho. The main character is Salamanca Tree Hiddle, who is a thirteen year old girl.
Sal and her grandparents go on a road trip to Lewiston, Idaho. Sal’s mother had died the year before in a bus accident there, and she wanted to see the site of the accident. She hopes by visiting the site on her mother’s birthday that she will be able to bring her back.
Along the way Sal, tells her grandparents the story of her best friend , Phoebe, whose mother, like Sal’s, unexpectedly decides to leave home. Sals meets Phoebe when Sal and her father leave their farm and move to Ohio.
During the trip with her grandparents Sal realizes the complexity of her own mothers decision to leave home. When they have almost reached the site of the accident , Sal’s grandmother falls ill, and Sal must drive the car down the treacherous slopes to the
