The Fear of a Boy
Have you ever had the feeling of being lonely and knowing no one is coming back for you? The feeling you get when you lost in a huge store and you can’t find your mother anywhere. I feeling of loneliness plays with our emotions so much and leaves such a scar, we will never be able to forget it. So many people today in our world fear all kinds of loneliness. But Doodle was hit hard with loneliness when his brother (the narrator) leaves him alone by himself. In the “Scarlet Ibis” James Hurst conveys the idea that loneliness is the fear of all mankind, through Doodle and the Narrator.
First of all, the narrator conveys loneliness when he has no siblings. “I thought myself pretty smart at many things, like holding my breath, running, jumping, or climbing the vines in Old Woman Swam, and I wanted more than anything else someone to race to Horsehead Landing, someone to box with, and someone to perch with in the top fork of the great pine behind the barn, where across the fields and swamps you could see the sea. I wanted a brother. (pg 318)” The narrator is showing lonliness because he does not have a brother to share his activities with and be boys with. He wants so badly to have a brother that he will do anything. But when he finds out the Doodle probably is not going to be able to even run, walk or move around much, the narrator is so selfish that he thought about smoother Doodle with a pillow. Thus the narrator is proving out of lonliness that he needs and wants and brother so badly that he will kill to have one. “It was bad having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow. (pg 318)” But, when he sees Doodle smile at him he knows that Doodle is all there and he is going to The fear of loneliness can do many things to the human; it can kill you or led you into doing things you never thought you could do. But know matter what the fear of loneliness is as nasty as Doodle’s death. Further more, The “Scarlet Ibis”, (James Hurst) conveys the idea that loneliness is the fear of all mankind. Through Doodle and the Narrator. do all of the things normal, other brothers would do. And in order for him to see that.
Secondly, Doodle conveys lonliness when the narrator leaves him to die. “Doodle was frightened of being left. ‘Don’t go leave me, Brother,’ he cried. (Pg 318)” Doodle was frightened of being left alone. The narrator would tell his brother he was going to leave him to get him to do what the narrator wanted him to do. Doodle was so afraid of being
