1 Mainland- The region of densely populated area that stretches from the mainland of Mesoamerica to the northern South American rimland

2. Rimland- The area of heavy population density that is around the coast or the "rim" of South America

3. Mestizos- People of mixed heritage of European blood and indigenous Americans

8. Maquiladora- A special factor constructed near the border which provides Mexicans jobs and the US cheap labor

9. NAFTA- North American Free Trade Association- A term to help Mexicans by introducing more jobs and also the US by moving businesses to places with cheaper wages

10. Latifundia- Huge plantations owned by the wealthy

11. Minifundia- Farms lent to farmers who could not afford land, this plan usually comes with sharecropping (you only keep a % of what you produce)

12. Ejido- The government promotes the communal farms so that everyone could all farm, originally by the indigenous people of America

13. Cash Crop- Crops raised to mainly produce profit and not for personal use

14. Ecotourism- Tourist destinations that shows the tourist both the natural scenic beauties, and the native people inhabiting them

15. Plantation Agriculture- Large scaled farming, usually not for subsistence cropping.

3. The population is concentrated along the coast, which is called the rimland and also the central Mesoamerica, called the mainland. The map on pg507 shows a higher concentration of dots near the rimland region and also the inland of central America
