Avian Flu

Fortunately, I believe I have a good plan of action if the virus does make its way to the United States. The article explains that if the virus does mutate so it can transfer from human to human it could spread throughout the world in two to three weeks. I would try and use vacation time at work as a way to get away from work and see if the virus does make it to America. If it doesn't I will hopefully have a job to return too, but if it does money and my job is going to be the least of my worries. A few years ago my parents built a lake house in the mountains of North Carolina on Lake Fontana. The lake is surrounded by state and national park. So our house is one of few houses that are on this lake, the house is miles away from civilization. I will be able to move my family from our suburban neighborhood to our lake house. The article recommends that you isolate yourself from other people for a time period of one to three months. The lake house would be perfect for isolating my family as well as extended family since the house is capable of supporting a large number of people. If the situation is as bad as it sounds our economy will likely shut down, in this case were are going to have to search for sources of food, water and power.

Since our lake house is located in the mountains we were forced to drill a well when we built the house. The well will give us a continued supply of drinking water that we wouldn't have normally had if we had been on the city water line. The next problem we will have is the issue of power. When my dad was building the house he designed it to have ventilation in the work room in our basement for two generators. This was done out of concern that we could get stuck up there in a snow storm with out any power. The generators could be used to provide power for the house and well. We have a 100 gallon gas container that we keep filled so we can fuel or boats and Sea Doo's at our dock during the summer. This supply of gas would hopefully supply us with enough generated power to last out the pandemic.

One of the most important issues to cover is the issue of food. Bryson City is the closest city with a store. We would likely stock up on as much food as possible at this store. Swain county is one of the poorest counties in North Carolina so many of the people there are self sufficient, hopefully the store in Bryson City wouldn't see the mad rush like many stores would see that are located near large populations. Because farming is so abundant in this area we may be able to purchase additional food supply from people in
